To avoid a real-life Halloween horror story – going blind because of a costume accessory – the American Academy of Ophthalmology is warning the public against wearing costume contact lenses purchased without a prescription. These illegally sold cosmetic lenses may not be sterile and can cause a host of serious eye problems capable of morphing a fun Halloween night into a nightmare.
- Get an eye exam
- Get a valid prescription
- Buy lenses from a retailer that asks for your prescription
- Follow proper contact lens care instructions
- Don't share your contact lenses with others
One in six Americans age 65 and older have a vision impairment that
cannot be corrected with glasses or contact lenses. The risk of eye
disease increases with age, yet many older adults neglect to see an
ophthalmologist for care. To bring attention to taking care of our eyes
as we age, the American Academy of Ophthalmology celebrates Healthy
Aging Month to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of vision loss -
and steps to help seniors take care of their sight. The most common eye diseases and conditions that affect older adults include age-related macular degeneration
(AMD), cataract
, diabetic retinopathy
, dry eye
, glaucoma
, and low vision.
Many of these diseases and conditions do not have noticeable symptoms
in their early stages, but they can be detected through a comprehensive
dilated eye exam. Treatment is most effective when an eye disease is
diagnosed early.
Some vision problems the elderly SHOULD NOT ignore are:
Floaters
Cloudy Vision
Dark Spots
Blind Spots
Sudden Vision Changes
Halo's

This year World Sight Day falls on October 11th. This significant day was marked by the World Health Organization, in association with the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IABP)by the Lions Club International Foundation. Most vision impairment and blindness can be treatment or prevented if detected early. The theme for World Sight Day 2018 is Eye Care Everywhere. Some of the eye diseases which receive attention on the World Sight Day are trachoma, low vision, dry eye, cataract
, blurred vision, macular degeneration, nearsightedness, glaucoma, amblyopia, refractive error and diabetic retinopathy. The day was created to support people who face difficulty in seeing, reading or writing.
